How DryMark Restoration Tacoma Was Born in Tacoma

It was a wet Tuesday in March, the kind where the rain in Tacoma doesn’t stop so much as it changes angles. We’d been working restoration jobs across the South Sound for another outfit, and we walked into a house near North Slope Historic District where a pipe had burst three days earlier. The homeowner, a woman in her sixties, had already paid another company to “dry it out.” They’d set two fans in the living room, run them for 48 hours, and handed her a bill for work that left her baseboards swollen and her hallway smelling like wet cardboard.

We pulled the moisture meter. The drywall behind her kitchen cabinets read 28% - anything over 16% and you’re growing mold she couldn’t see yet. She sat on her stairs and cried. Not dramatic tears. Quiet ones. The kind that come when you realize you’ve been charged for a job that wasn’t done, and now you’re going to pay again.

That was the moment. Not anger at the other company - we’d seen plenty of that. It was the realization that Tacoma deserved something different. A branch of DryMark Restoration that would bring the Haven Standard here: every job quoted in writing before we started, every drying log signed and dated, every moisture reading documented so her adjuster couldn’t deny what was actually there. We opened this branch in 2011 to be that. Still are.

Alicia Brennan’s Personal Connection to the Damage Restoration Trade

We didn’t stumble into this work. We were pulled into it by the smell of wet lumber and the particular silence of a house that’s been emptied after a flood.

Our training came from a tradesman who taught us to read a wall like a book - to know by the discoloration pattern whether water came from above or below, whether it was fresh or had been sitting long enough to change the chemistry of the drywall mud. He never let us touch a dehumidifier until we could explain why vapor pressure moves moisture from wet materials to dry air, and why getting the math wrong means you’re drying the room while the wall cavity stays soaked. That education took years. It felt like apprenticeship, not employment.

The work gets us out of bed because it’s tangible in a way most jobs aren’t. You start with a disaster - a sewage backup in a Fircrest rancher, a sprinkler flood through a downtown Tacoma loft - and you end with a space that’s measurably dry, with the readings to prove it. There’s a moment on every job, usually around day three, when the homeowner walks in and realizes it doesn’t smell like damage anymore. That’s the moment. Not the invoice, not the signed completion. That inhale.

If we weren’t doing this, we’d probably be doing something else with numbers and proof. Maybe surveying land, maybe brewing beer with precise gravity readings. We like processes that produce measurable outcomes. Restoration satisfies that itch and happens to keep people from getting sick in their own homes.

We’ve been at this for over a decade now, long enough to recognize the particular challenges of Tacoma’s climate - the way our wet winters extend drying times, the way older homes in the North End hold moisture in lath-and-plaster walls that newer equipment isn’t always calibrated for. That knowledge wasn’t learned in a classroom. It was learned in crawl spaces, in attics, in the hours between when a homeowner calls and when we can get there with the right gear.

Meet Alicia Brennan - The Person Behind Every Job

We’re Alicia Brennan, Owner and Founder of this branch of DryMark Restoration Tacoma. We’ve led water damage mitigation, mold remediation, and fire damage restoration projects across Pierce County and south King County since opening here in 2011.

Our training includes IICRC certification in Water Damage Restoration (WRT) and Applied Microbial Remediation (AMRT), plus ongoing education in the structural drying standards that underpin the Haven Standard documentation system. We don’t send anyone to a job we wouldn’t send to our own mother’s house.

What separates us from a corporate franchise technician? We still carry a moisture meter in our own truck, and we still show up to the jobs where something’s gone sideways. On weekends, you’ll find us restoring vintage furniture - the kind of slow, patient work that teaches you to spot what’s actually damaged versus what just looks wrong. That eye carries over.

Our commitment to you is direct: every job gets a written scope and flat price before we start, and we don’t leave until the readings prove it’s dry.

Our Promise to Tacoma Homeowners

We operate under the Haven Standard, and we take its five values seriously.

Have it in writing. Every restoration job is quoted in writing before it starts. Not an estimate that balloons. A flat price, a written scope, a written warranty. Clause 1 of the Haven Standard exists because we watched too many homeowners in Tacoma sign vague work orders and get surprised later.

Arrive on schedule. We give you a real window, a named technician, and a text when they’re on the way. Not “sometime Tuesday” - a commitment we keep.

Verified crews. Every pro working under our name is required to hold the license and insurance their state requires. We don’t send untrained labor into your home.

Evidence on every job. Photos and readings of what we actually found, documented daily, room by room. This is what turns a restoration invoice into a claim your insurer pays without a fight - and it’s why DryMark was acquired by Haven in the first place.

No surprises. No door upsell, no scope creep, no “while we’re in here.” The price we write is the price you pay.

Our Credentials

Technician performing professional water damage restoration in a residential home.
Our Credentials
  • State-licensed - required for all water damage and mold remediation work in Washington
  • Insured & bonded - protection for your property while we’re working in your home
  • Years of local experience - serving Tacoma and surrounding communities since 2011
  • Strong local reputation - built job by job, reading by reading, across Pierce and south King counties

Here’s why each matters to you as a homeowner. State licensing means we’ve met Washington’s requirements for handling contaminated water, structural drying, and microbial remediation - work that affects your family’s health. Insurance and bonding means if something goes wrong in your home, you’re not chasing us personally for coverage. Local experience means we know how Tacoma’s building stock behaves: the 1920s bungalows with balloon framing that hides water migration, the mid-century ranches with slab foundations that wick moisture differently than crawl spaces. And reputation - real reputation, not star ratings - means we can’t afford to do a bad job and disappear. We’re here tomorrow because we did right by someone yesterday.

Our hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM; Saturday and Sunday, 7:30 AM to 7:00 PM. Calls are answered by a live coordinator who connects you with our local team.

Rooted in Tacoma

We’re not pretending to be from somewhere else. Our trucks are parked here. Our crew lives in neighborhoods you know - Lakewood, Puyallup, the Eastside. We’ve dried out basements near Point Defiance after king tides backed up storm drains, and we’ve handled sprinkler floods in the Stadium District condos where a single unit’s damage spreads through four floors of shared plumbing.

We source equipment through the Haven network - brands like Dri-Eaz and Phoenix that we’ve standardized on because their drying curves are documented and reproducible - but the decisions happen here. Whether to tent and heat-dry a hardwood floor in a North End craftsman, or whether the moisture content in that fir means it’s salvageable. That’s local knowledge, earned in this market, and it’s what you’re hiring when you call us.

Dry isn’t a metaphor. It’s a measurable condition with a number attached. Getting back to it is the entire job. That’s what the name means, and that’s what we deliver.
